WebP vs JPG vs PNG: Which Image Format Should You Use?

Confused about image formats? This guide breaks down the pros, cons, and ideal use cases for WebP, JPG, PNG, and AVIF to help you choose the right format every time.

Image Format Quick Overview

JPG (JPEG) is the most widely used format for photos and complex images. It uses lossy compression, offering small file sizes at the cost of some quality loss with each edit/save cycle.

PNG supports transparency and uses lossless compression, making it ideal for graphics, logos, and screenshots. File sizes are larger than JPG but quality is preserved perfectly.

WebP: The Modern Champion

WebP, developed by Google, supports both lossy and lossless compression, plus transparency — combining the best features of both JPG and PNG. WebP files are typically 25-35% smaller than equivalent JPGs.

Browser support for WebP is now universal (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge). There's no reason not to use WebP for web images in 2026.

AVIF: The Future Format

AVIF is the newest format, offering even better compression than WebP (up to 50% smaller than JPG). It supports transparency, HDR, and wide color gamuts.

Browser support is growing but not yet universal. AVIF is a great choice if you can provide JPG/WebP fallbacks for older browsers.

When to Use Each Format

Use JPG for: Photos where file size matters and you don't need transparency. Quality 80-85% is the sweet spot for web use.

Use PNG for: Graphics with transparency, screenshots, logos, and images that require pixel-perfect clarity. Use WebP for: Everything on the web — it's smaller than both JPG and PNG while maintaining quality. Use AVIF for: Maximum compression when browser support allows.

How to Convert Between Formats

Futoo offers a free online format converter that handles all major image formats. Simply upload your images, choose the target format, and download the converted files. All processing happens in your browser for maximum speed and privacy.

If you use the Fatkun extension for batch downloads, you can enable automatic format conversion in settings. Downloaded WebP and AVIF images will be automatically converted to JPG or PNG as you prefer.
